Orange Dress with Silk Trim and Linen Couched Cording

IMG_8143-2For this project I cut strips from woven silk as trim on the neckline and cuffs, spun linen thread into cording of 2 sizes (smaller for couching over seams and larger for edging), and whipstitched all of the seams flat with silk thread.

The cord couched over the seams is subtle and not immediately obvious, which is nice because it doesn’t pull focus from the trim. I feel like it adds a bit of weight to the seams and helps them lay straight without puckering. I chose linen rather than wool because I wanted to be able to put this is the machine to wash it occasionally, and even on “cold” my machine felts the crap out of anything wool.

This was a “make something nice for me because I’ve spent all my time doing things for other people” project. It took many hours, and I am very pleased with the final product!
